Historical background
ABKHAZIA
Abkhasia is a region in northwest Georgia located on the Black Sea. In 1854, the Abkhazian principality conquered by the Russians was attached to Georgia. After the Russian Revolution of 1917, Abkazia became part of the Republic of Georgia. Having become an Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic dependent on the Soviet Republic of Georgia, the region underwent a policy of forced \"Georgization\" under the leadership of the Georgians Stalin and Lavrenti Beria. The breakup of the USSR and the independence of Georgia reignited tensions in 1989 with a conflict that remains unresolved. In 2008, the Russo-Georgian war spread to Akhazia where Abkhazian and Russian militias chased out Georgian forces. On August 26, 2008, the Russian Federation recognized the independence of the Republic of Abkhazia.
