Historical background

AKARNANIA - ANACTORION

(4th century BC)

Anactorium, located at the entrance to the Gulf of Ambracia, near Actium, was one of the oldest Corinthian colonies founded in the 7th century BC. In 425, the Corinthian elements were driven out by the Athenians and the Acarnanians during the Peloponnesian War. During the Sacred War, between 355 and 346 BC, Anactorium, favorable to the Corinthians, sided with the Thebans against the Phocidians. It was at this time that monetary issues resumed.
