Historical background

AEMILIA

(62 BC)

Lucius Æmilius Lepidus Paullus was monetary triumvir in 63-62 BC, quaestor in 59, praetor in 53, then consul in 50 BC with Caius Claudius Marcellus. He does not seem to have a political role after Caesar's death in 44 BC but was nevertheless part of the embassy sent to Antony by the Senate in 43 BC, before the disappearance of the two consuls Hirtius and Pansa at the Battle of Mutina. Paullus and his son are among the outcasts of 43. They escape and take refuge with Brutus. After Philippi (42 BC), Paullus fled to Miletus and spent the last years of his life in Asia Minor, despite Octavian's pardon.
