Historical background

ALEXANDER

(June 308 - late 310, early 311)

Alexander was appointed governor of the diocese of Africa by Maximian Hercules from 303. When Maxentius revolted against Severus II and seized Rome on October 28, 306, Alexander joined him. However, relations between the two men soon soured and, perhaps pushed by Constantine or Maximian Hercules himself, Alexander put on the purple in the spring of 308, cutting Maxentius off from the breadbasket that is Africa. Maxentius sends Rufus Volusianus to recover this province so important for the life of Rome. Finally, after a long and difficult campaign, Alexander, defeated, commits suicide and the reprisals in Africa are terrible..
