In 1482, during the partition of Saxony, the Duchy of Saxony fell to two branches, the Ernestine branch and the Albertine branch. In 1482, the Duchy of Saxe-Altenburg returned to the Ernestine branch before being administered by the Albertine branch from 1547. In 1603, Frédéric-Guillaume, son of Jean-Guillaume of the old line of Weimar, founded the Altenburg League. Saxe-Altenburg entered the Gotha family in 1672.
