Historical background

GERMANY - ELECTORATE OF BAVARIA - MAXIMILIAN III JOSEPH

(1745-1777)

Maximilian III Joseph succeeded his father, Charles, in 1745. Charles, who had tried to seize the imperial crown, had seen Munich occupied and Bavaria was only returned to Maximilian III after he recognized the claims of François de Lorraine and Marie-Thérèse to the Empire. He spent his reign trying to restore his duchy. Without heir, the Duchy of Bavaria passed into the house of Sulzbach with Charles-Théodore (1777-1799).
