Historical background

GERMANY - GERMAN NEW GUINEA

(1884-1919)

German New Guinea (in German Deutsch-Neuguinea) was a protectorate of the German Empire from 1884 to 1919 located in the western Pacific Ocean. The annexation of the southeastern part of New Guinea by the Australian colony of Queensland in 1883 brought renewed interest from the Germans for the northeastern part of the island, especially since the Dutch were already occupying it. the western part. On November 2, 1884, alongside the flag of the recent New Guinea Company (in German Neuguinea-Compagnie), the German flag flew over the Land of Kaiser Wilhelm, the Bismarck Archipelago and the German Solomon Islands. On October 15, 1885, the Germans took possession of the Marshall Islands. German New Guinea includes all of the German possessions in the Pacific except for German Samoa. It is made up of the Land of the Emperor William (northeast of the island of New Guinea), the Bismarck Archipelago; Northern Solomon Islands (northern Solomon Islands with Buka and Bougainville Islands), Caroline Islands; the Mariana Islands (except Guam); the Marshall Islands; Palau; and Nauru.
