GERMANY - WEIMAR REPUBLIC

(9/11/1918-30/01/1933)

Wilhelm II abdicated on November 9, 1918 and the republic was proclaimed in Berlin on November 11, 1918. A revolution ensued which ended in a bloodbath in January 1919 with the elimination of Rosa Luxembourg and Karl Liebknecht and the emergence free corps made up of demobilized soldiers. A Constituent Assembly met in Weimar, while the allies decided at Versailles on the fate of defeated Germany (June 28, 1919). The new Constitution was voted on August 11, 1919. Paul von Hindenburg (2/10/1847-2/08/1934), former senior officer of the Prussian army, was elected on May 12, 1925 president of the republic after the death of 'Ebert. Re-elected in 1932, he entrusted Adolph Hitler, winner of the elections, with forming the government in 1933, and died the following year..
