Historical background

GERMANY - KINGDOM OF PRUSSIA - FREDERICK-WILLIAM III

(16/11/1797-7/07/1840)

Frédéric-Guillaume III (3/08/1770-7/07/1840) is the nephew of Frédéric II and the son of Frédéric-Auguste II. He participated in the revolutionary wars and was one of the most indomitable enemies of the French with his wife Louise of Mecklenburg. His defeat at Jena on October 14, 1806 led to the occupation of Berlin and the dismemberment of Prussia at the Treaty of Tilsitt (1807). Frederick William III, after the Russian campaign, raised the standard of revenge and was one of the main victors in the Battle of Leipzig in 1813. He occupied Paris in 1814 and 1815 and was one of the great beneficiaries of the Treaty of Vienna in 1815. He aligned himself with the conservative policy of Metternich to maintain order in Europe. The Zollverein, economic union of North Germany, was set up from 1834.
