Historical background

GERMANY - SAXONY - DUCHY OF SAXONY - JOHN-GEORGE I

(1591-1656)

Jean-Georges, son of Christian I (1586-1591), belongs to the Albertine line of the Saxony family. On the death of their father, a distant cousin of the Ernestine line, Frédéric-Guillaume de Saxe-Altenburg, was regent from 1591 to 1602 for the three brothers Christian II (1591-1611), Auguste (1591-1615) and Jean- George I (1591-1656). From 1615, Jean-Georges I reigned alone. On his death in 1656, his eldest son, Jean-Georges II succeeded him (1656-1680).
