Historical background

ALSACE - TOWN OF WISSEMBOURG

(Seventeenth century)

The origin of Wissembourg dates back to the establishment of a Benedictine abbey in the 7th century. The abbey justified its monetary rights with a certainly apocryphal diploma from Dagobert (624). It obtained in 1275 from Rodolphe de Habsbourg a confirmation of its monetary right which was renewed in 1339, 1348 and 1356. In 1448, the city succeeded in obtaining from the emperor the postage of the authority of the abbots but it did not strike coin that during the first half of the 17th century.
