Obverse description : Sur un arrière plan champêtre, un couple se tient assis face à face. L’époux à droite s’apprête à passer l’anneau au doigt de sa future épouse, placée à gauche, assise sur un bloc portant la signature du graveur : O. ROTY 1895 .
Obverse translation : Toujours.

Reverse legend : BM / 11 JUILLET 1900.
Reverse description : Monogramme couronné gravé. Un arbre à gauche, entouré de lierre cache le côté d’une fontaine qui déverse ses eaux dans un lac. En arrière plan des collines. Sur la fontaine en piédestal, un amour nue contemple le paysage .

Médaille attribuée à André de Brosses (1876-1944), officier, et Marie-Thérèse de Thy de Milly (1878-1903).
Diamètre sans la bélière : 41,5 mm.

Historical background


LOVE AND MARRIAGE

It was customary in the past to give a treizain during the wedding mass. This treizain was blessed and signified entry into a community of property for the married couple. The treizain, which later became a medal or wedding token, was so called in honor of Jesus Christ and the twelve apostles. This practice continued until the first half of the 20th century. The reference work on the subject is the work of Jules Florange, Love and marriage in numismatics, Moulins, 1936 now replaced by that of Henri Térisse, La Numismatique du Mariage, Argenton-sur-Creuse 2008.
