Historical background

ANDORRA

(Nineteenth century)

Andorra's privileges can be traced back to the reign of Charlemagne in 806. Trimming rules were set in 1278 and still operate today. The President of the Republic and the Bishop of Urgel are the co-princes of Andorra. In 1835, the bishop of Albi was appointed co-prince to counterbalance the influence of the bishop of Urgel who was a Carlist. The 1873 issue could then have its origins in the Carlist wars that shook Spain in the 19th century. Charles, Count of Molina (1788-1855), refused to recognize his niece Isabella as Queen of Spain in 1833 after the death of Ferdinand VII. Charles VII (Carlos), Duke of Madrid (1848-1909), continued the struggle undertaken by his father, the Count of Molina, between 1868 and 1875, to try to ascend the throne of Spain. The coins with his effigy are engraved by Charles Wurden.
