Historical background


ANDRONIKOS II and ANDRONIKOS III PALAIOLOGOS

(1325-1334)

Michael VIII, the father of Andronicus, had re-established the Byzantine Empire in 1261 after 57 years of Latin occupation. Andronicus II reigned from 1282 to 1328. His son Michael IX died before him. His grandson, Andronicus III, succeeded him. Andronicus was forced to abdicate on May 24, 1328. Andronicus II died on February 13, 1332. Andronicus III did not survive him long, he died on June 15, 1341.
