Historical background

ANGOUMOIS - COUNTIES OF ANGOULÊME AND LA MARCHE - ANONYMOUS

(1199-13th century)

By the marriage of Hugues IX of Lusignan, Count of La Marche, with Mathilde, the two counties are theoretically united. In fact, Adalbert V, leaving for the crusade, sold his county of Marche to Henry II Plantagenet. English domination lasted until the death of Richard Coeur de Lion in 1199. Hugues IX became count that year but Jean-Sans-Terre occupied the county in 1202-1203. After the clerk of Jean's property on the continent by Philippe II Auguste, Eleanor of Aquitaine returned the county to Hugues IX who united the two counties again until his death in 1219. His son, Hugues X (1219-1249) , succeeds him.
