Historical background

APULIA - SALAPIA

(4th - 3rd century BC)

Salapia, ancient city of Apulia, was a fortified settlement of the Messapians with access to the Adriatic Sea. Tradition attributed the foundation of Salapia to Diomedes. Salapia was first Rome's ally in the wars against the Samnites. In 216, after the disaster of Cannae where Rome was crushed, Dazos, the ruler of Arpi abandoned the Roman alliance to rally Hannibal and the Carthaginians (Appian, Hannibal VII, 31). The city received a Numidian garrison before being taken over by the Romans in 210 BC. The city was taken and ransacked during the Social War, then abandoned in the 1st century BC..
