Historical background

AQUITAINE - DUCHY OF AQUITAINE - EDWARD II OF ENGLAND

(1307-1327)

Edward II (1285-1327), son of Edward I and Éléonore de Castille, married in 1308 Isabelle de France, (la louve de France, 1292-1358), daughter of Philippe IV le Bel, sister of Louis X, Philip V and Charles IV. The reign of Edward II was one of great confusion. The English were defeated by the Scots of Robert Bruce in 1314 at Bannockburn which ensured the freedom of the kingdom of Scotland. Edward, a notorious homosexual, alienated his barons and his wife and ended up provoking a civil war from 1322. Charles IV pronounced the seizure of Guyenne. Isabelle took refuge in France with her eldest son, Édouard. Eventually, Edward II was deposed and replaced by his son. He was assassinated under mysterious conditions before the end of the year 1327 (cf. The Accursed Kings).
