Obverse description : Le roi Henry couronné vu à mi-corps de face sous une stalle gothique, vêtu d'une grande chasuble, tenant l'épée haute ; la couronne est sommée d’un annelet et la tête du roi est encadrée de deux roses à cinq pétales.

AQUITAINE - DUCHY OF AQUITAINE - HENRY IV, HENRY V or HENRY VI

(1399-1453)

Henry IV (1366-1413) was the son of John of Ghent, Duke of Lancaster, third son of Edward III. Henry IV overthrew Richard II Plantagenet who was assassinated in 1399. His son Henry V (1387-1422) succeeded his father to the throne of England and defeated the French at Agincourt in 1415. By the Treaty of Troyes of 1420, Henry V is declared heir to the throne of France and marries Catherine of France, daughter of Charles VI. Henry VI (1421-1471) succeeded his father in 1422 on the thrones of France and England. He was crowned at Notre Dame de Paris in 1431, but he lost the war and definitively Guyenne in 1453. Only one English city remained in France, Calais. Henry VI will be assassinated in 1471.
