Historical background

AQUITAINE - DUCHY OF AQUITAINE - RICHARD II

(1377-1399)

After the death of Edward III, the Black Prince's son, Richard, acceded to the throne of England in June 1377 as Richard II. He was only ten years old and his uncle John of Ghent, Duke of Lancaster, assumed the regency. As early as 1377, the English lost 134 towns and castles. In 1381, Jean de Gand had to face many revolts linked to excessive taxes. In 1396 Richard married Isabella of France who was only six years old. In 1399, Henry of Lancaster, son of John of Ghent, overthrew Richard II. Abandoned by his family, Richard II abdicated.
