Historical background

ARAB-SASANIAN

(7th century AD)

Coinage in the name of Yarsgard III

After the death of Chosroes II, the Sassanid princes brought to power by the feudal lords were assassinated a few months after their coronation. In 632, one of the last survivors of the royal family had to be brought out of hiding to be crowned under the name of Yazdgard III. But four years later, the standard of Kavadh, silk brocade covered with sumptuous jewels and symbol of the power of the Sassanids, fell into the hands of the Arabs. Finally, tracked down after the defeat of Nihavand (642), Yazdgard III ends his flight near Merv, where he is assassinated in 651.
