Historical background

ARCADIA - ACHAEAN LEAGUE - ANTIGONEIA (MANTINEIA)

(2nd century BC)

Mantinea was one of the most important cities in Arcadia. It was founded in the 6th century BC. The city was often the enemy of Sparta during the numerous conflicts which opposed it to the warrior city. After the Battle of Mantinea, the city fell under Spartan domination and was dismantled in 385 BC. Refounded after Leuctra in 371 BC, Mantinea participated in the foundation of Megalopolis, but after 362 BC- C., Mantinea fell back into the Spartan alliance. The city was destroyed by Antigone Doson, king of Macedonia in 223 BC who refounded it under the name of Antigoneia which it was to keep until the reign of Hadrian.
