Historical background

ARTS AND TRADES - SCHOOLS

n/a

The expression "arts and crafts" dates back to the 18th century and was similar at the time to the term "techniques", implemented by corporations of craftsmen or artists. Previously, the classification of the arts of the Middle Ages included, among other things, the mechanical arts, which included the activities of transformation of matter (steelmaking or glassmaking, for example). Today, there are schools, one of which, the Arts et Métiers ParisTech engineering school, was founded by the Duke of La Rochefoucauld-Liancourt in 1780, and the other, the National Conservatory of Arts and Crafts, was founded by Abbé Grégoire in 1794.
