Reverse legend : IOVI CON-SER/ -|-// P.
Reverse description : Aurélien lauré, en habit militaire, debout à droite, tenant un sceptre de la main gauche et recevant de la main droite un globe que lui présente Jupiter nu, debout à gauche, avec son manteau déployé derrière lui, tenant un sceptre de la main gauche.
Reverse translation : “Iovi Conservatori”, (À Jupiter le protecteur).

Buste extraordinaire ! Type correspondant au RIC temp. n°2600 qui recense 16 exemplaires, dont le nôtre, provenant d’une vente M. Vosper en 2005.

AURELIAN

Aurelian was born around 207 in Sirmium. After a brilliant military career, he was proclaimed august at Sirmium after the death of Claudius II and remained sole emperor after the suicide of Quintille. He made the painful decision to abandon Dacia in 271, then attacked Zenobia and Vaballath by seizing Palmyra in 272. Then, he undertook the reconquest of the Gallic Empire and defeated Tetricus at Châlons-sur-Marne. He triumphs in Rome and saves the life of his famous prisoners. He was assassinated when he was preparing a campaign against the Sassanids in order to reconquer Mesopotamia..
