Historical background

AUSTRIA - TYROLEAN REBELLION

1809

After the Treaty of Pressburg (1805), Tyrol was annexed by Bavaria. From April 9, 1809, the population loyal to Emperor Francis II of Austria rose up. Innkeeper Andreas Hofer leads the insurrectionary movement against Bavaria (against the French Civil Code, the Concordat and conscription). On the 11th, his troops defeated the Bavarians at Sterzing and occupied Innsbruck. Napoleon's victory against the Austrians of Archduke Charles enabled the Bavarians to retake Innsbruck, but as soon as the Napoleonic troops left, the rebellion resumed. On May 25 and 29, Hofer's troops defeated the Bavarians at Bergisel. Hofer took Innsbruck on the 30th. Wagram's victory on July 6 canceled the previous successes. Napoleon sends 40,000 men to retake Innsbruck. The insurrection was finally crushed and Hofer was shot in 1810 by the French..
