Historical background

AUSTRIA - STYRIA - MAXIMILIAN I

(08/19/1493-01/12/1519)

Maximilian was born on March 22, 1459 in Wiener-Neustadt, son of Emperor Frederick III. In 1477, he married Marie de Bourgogne, only daughter and heiress of Charles the Bold; this marriage brought the Netherlands into the possessions of the Habsburgs, which triggered a war of succession with the King of France Louis XI which was only settled with the Treaty of Arras (December 23, 1482); this treaty granted the King of France Picardy and Burgundy, Maximilian keeping the Netherlands and Franche-Comté. After the death of Marie de Bourgogne in 1482, following a fall from a horse, he remained regent of the Netherlands and tried to incorporate Flanders into it, provoking the revolts of Ghent and Liège. This new conflict only ended with the peace of Kadzand (June 30, 1492). In 1489, he married by proxy Anne of Brittany, but this marriage contrary to the interests of the King of France was broken. He became emperor on the death of his father and in 1493 he married his son, Philippe le Beau, to Jeanne la Folle. He left to his grandson, Charles V, more than half of Europe.
