Historical background

AUSTRIA - TYROL - RUDOLF II

(1576-1612)

Rodolphe II (1552-1612) is, on his coins, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire (1576-1612), King of the Germans, of Hungary (1572-1608) and of Bohemia (1575-1611), Duke of Burgundy and Count of Tyrol. He established a brilliant court in Prague where he died. He was a great patron, friends of science and the arts (Kepler). He was stripped of his states by Matthias, his brother, who left him only the imperial title. On the reverse the shield is quartered: 1 Hungary, 2 Bohemia, 3 Styria, 4 Burgundy, 5 Austria, 6 Castile, 7 Carinthia, 8 Carniola, 9 Habsburg, 10 Goriz, 11 Burgau, 12 Swabia, 13 Wurttemberg, 14 Ferette and on the very small Tyrolean shield.
