Historical background

BÉARN - LORDSHIP OF BÉARN - THE CENTULLES

(11th-14th centuries)

It was Centulle III the Younger, Viscount (1012-1058), who received the sovereignty of the country from the Duke of Aquitaine Sancho the Great and usurped the right of coinage. In reality, the manufacture of coins did not begin before 1080 under Centulle IV (1058-1088) who took the name of count (for Bigorre and Oloron). Centulle V died in 1134. However, coinage continued for nearly two hundred years.
