Historical background

BELGIUM - ABBEY OF THORN - MARGUERITE OF BREDERODE

(1557-1577)

Thorn is located north of the bishopric of Liège, between Maaseik and Roermonde (Dutch Limburg). A monastery was founded in the 10th century by Count Ansfrid and his wife Hilsonde. This monastery was then transformed into a chapter of canonesses. Its abbess had the title of princess of the empire and the abbey minted coins from the beginning of the 11th century. However, the strikes quickly ceased and only resumed under the Abesse Marguerite de Brederode (1557-1577). She was accused of minting coins that were too low in weight.
