Historical background

BOEOTIA - BOEOTIAN LEAGUE

(225-171 BC)

Thebes had been razed by Alexander the Great in 335 BC and its inhabitants massacred or sold as slaves. Thebes was rebuilt in 316 BC by Cassander, under Macedonian control. Demetrius Poliorcetes seized the city in 291 BC, which regained its independence at the fall of the epigone in 288 BC. Monetary production resumed in 221 BC. Thebes became the capital of the Boeotian League, formed after the proclamation of the Greek cities in 196 BC in Corinth by Flaminius. The League disappears when Boeotia is integrated and becomes a Roman province (Achaia).
