Historical background

BEOTIA - TANAGRA

(4th century BC)

Tanagra was only the second city of the Boeotians, the supremacy being held by Thebes. The city began to monetize at the end of the 6th century BC. Supported by Athens, Tanagra was several times at the head of the Boeotian Confederation. But Thebes always retained the leading role. Tanagra was the ally of the Persians with Thebes during the second Persian war in 480 BC. After Plataea, the city lost its importance which it regained around 450 when the workshop was again opened and a democratic government installed. In 446, Thebes regained hegemony over Boeotia. It was only following the peace of the Great King in 387 BC (treaty of Antalcidas) that Tanagra regained its monetary independence before losing it again in 374 BC following the coup of State of Pelopidas in 379 BC After the Battle of Chaeronea in 338 BC, Tanagra became part of the new Boeotian league under Macedonian protectorate.
