Historical background

BEOTIA - THESPIAE

(3rd - 2nd century BC)

Thespies was destroyed after the Battle of Leuctra in 371 BC for supporting Sparta against Thebes. The city was rebuilt during the 3rd century BC. In 171 BC, still opposed to Thebes, it received the support of Rome. The city is reported in the Geography of Srabon and Pliny the Elder indicates that Thespies was a free city.
