Historical background

BERRY - LORDSHIP OF SAINT-AIGNAN - HERVÉ III DE DONZY

(1160-1194)

Saint-Aignan belonged to Thibaut le Tricheur. If the first coinage is of the Bléso-Chartrain type, that of the second half of the 12th century is inspired by the primitive chatel of Saint-Martin de Tours. Thibaut IV, Count of Blois, seized the seigneury of Saint-Aignan from Geoffroy III. Minting could resume under Hervé III de Donzy. The Donzy family also owned Gien. After the disappearance of Hervé IV de Donzy in 1222, Saint-Aignan passed to Guy de Châtillon who married Agnès de Donzy.
