Sauromatès succeeded Eupator between 170 and 172. His reign of more than forty years made him associate on the coinage, Marc Aurelius, Lucius Verus, Commodus, Septimius Severus and Caracalla. He succeeded in maintaining his kingdom during the civil wars. It was Rheskuporis II (211-228) who succeeded him.
