Historical background

BURGUNDY - CLUNY ABBEY - ANONYMOUS

(12th - 13th centuries)

Coinage in Cluny did not begin until 1123 and was confirmed by a diploma of 1204. However, from 1239, coinage became sporadic and was suppressed before the end of the 13th century. The abbey had leased the Melle workshop in the 11th and 12th centuries. Cluny Abbey was dismantled and destroyed during the revolution after being sold by the republic as a stone quarry.
