Historical background

BURGUNDY (COUNTY OF)

In 1477, on the death of Charles the Bold, the Duchy of Burgundy was dismantled between France, which recovered Burgundy proper, and the House of Habsburg, which recovered Franche-Comté or County of Burgundy. In 1548 the county of Burgundy passed to the Spanish branch of the Habsburgs and was incorporated into the circle of Burgundy (with Luxembourg, Brabant, Hainaut, Flanders, etc.). Louis XIV seized the County of Burgundy in 1668 but had to return it during the Peace of Aix-la-Chapelle. He was to reconquer this county in 1674 and the possession was confirmed in 1678 by the Treaty of Nijmegen.
