Historical background

BRAZIL - PRINCE JOHN REGENT

(1799-1816)

John VI of Portugal (1767-1826) took refuge in Brazil when he felt in danger in Portugal and did not return there until 1816. John was regent for his mother Mary I (1734-1816), the wife of Peter III , between 1803 and 1816. Many coins of 8 Spanish or American colonies were overstruck to be transformed into coins of 960 Reis.
