Historical background

BRITTANY - COUNTY OF PENTHIÈVRE - ANONYMOUS. Coinage minted in the name of Etienne I

(1093-1138)

Étienne became Count of Penthièvre in 1093, collecting the inheritance of his brother Geoffroy. He then acquired the county of Richemont after the death of his two other brothers, Alain le Noir and Alain le Roux. He takes possession of Guingamp after his marriage to Havoise. At the end of his reign, he had to face the revolt of his son Geoffroy II Boterel who recovered the county of Lamballe in 1125 and succeeded him, on his death, in 1138.
