Historical background

BRITTANY - DUCHY OF BRITTANY - ANONYMOUS

(1186-1206)

Geoffroy, eldest son of Henry II Plantagenet, married Constance, daughter of Conan IV (1156-1169). Geoffroy is invested with Brittany in 1181. He revolts against his father and seeks the support of Philippe II but dies in 1186. Henri II is regent in Brittany until 1189. Constance becomes regent for his son Arthur. The death of Richard Coeur de Lion in 1199 reignites the war. Arthur was assassinated in 1203 at the instigation of his uncle, Jean-sans-Terre. Philippe takes advantage of this event to place the continental provinces of the Angevins under sequestration. In 1203, Guy de Thouars, who married Constance for the third time, was baillister for Alix, Constance's daughter. In 1206, Philippe Auguste dismissed the regent and married the young Alix to Pierre de Dreux dit Mauclerc, great-grandson of Louis VI. He was invested with the duchy in 1213.
