Historical background

BRITTANY - DUCHY OF BRITTANY - JOHN IV OF MONTFORT

(1345-1399)

Jean IV, son of Jean de Montfort, was born in 1341. For twenty years, the duchy was disputed with him by Charles de Blois. Master of Brittany after the defeat and death of Charles at the battle of Auray in 1364, he was the only duke until his death. During the second period of reign interspersed with leaks in England, he will have two implacable enemies: Du Guesclin and Clisson. He acquired the county of Penthièvre on the death of Jeanne de Blois in 1384. Jean IV died in Nantes in 1399 after having fought for more than forty years.
