BRIOSSUS VICUS - BRIOUX (Deux-Sèvres)

(7th century)

The country of Brioux called “Pagus Briocensis” in a charter of the abbey of Nouaillé of 799 had for capital “Brigiosum”, former Roman station on the way Poitiers Saintes, become Brioux. Brioux was a very active Merovingian mint. This pagus included all the territory of the archpriests of Melle, Bouin, Ruffec, Ambernac, Gençay, Chaunay, Rom, Lusignan, Sanxay, Saint Maixent, Exoudun. It was also a stage on the road to Santiago de Compostela. A Frankish cemetery (whose furniture is kept in the Niort museum). is certified in the municipality.
