Historical background

BRUTTIUM - BRETTIAN LEAGUE

(215-203 BC)

The Bruttii, a people originally from Central Italy, settled in Bruttium by merging with the local tribes of the Szeklers. In the 4th and 3rd centuries, they maintained their independence and fought against the Greek city-states of Italy. Coming into contact with the Romans during the struggle which opposed them to Pyrrhus (281-275 BC), they rallied to Hannibal during the Second Punic War (221-202 BC). After the departure of the Carthaginians, they found themselves facing the Romans who eventually integrated them between 194 and 190 BC..
