Historical background

BRUTTIUM - CROTON

(5th century BC)

Crotone is an Achaean colony founded in 710 BC Under the leadership of Milon, the Crotoniates captured Sybaris and destroyed it. In the following century, following internal struggles, the city declined before falling into the hands of Dionysius of Syracuse in 378 BC, then Agathokles in 296 BC and finally between those of Pyrrhus in 277 BC. It was conquered by the Romans during the Second Punic War after the Battle of Cannae in 216 BC..
