BRUTTIUM - VIBO VALENTIA (HIPPONION)

(2nd-1st century BC)

Hipponium, colony of Locri was founded in the 6th century BC at the same time as Medma. The city followed the destiny of its metropolis. The city was destroyed by Dionysius of Syracuse in 388 BC, rebuilt by the Carthaginians in 379 BC. It was subjugated by the Brettians in 356 BC. Agathokles captured it in 296 BC and finally taken over again by the Brettians. The city of Vibo Valentia was decided in 194 BC and founded on the site of Hipponium in 192 BC as a Latin colony.
