Historical background

BURGUNDIANS - LYON - GUNDOBAD

(480-511)

Gondebaud is the second son of Gondioc. Olybrius made him patrician of the West in 472 and governed Burgundy for his brother Chilpéric. Around 477, he had Chilpéric and another of his brothers, Gondemar, who owned Dauphiné, assassinated. In 493, his niece Clotilde was married to Clovis. She avenged her father by inciting Clovis to fight him. Gondebaud was defeated near Dijon and fled to Avignon. He abandoned Arianism and converted to the Catholic religion before obtaining Clovis' forgiveness and helping him fight the Visigoths. After being driven out of Provence, he retired to Geneva where he died in 516.
