Historical background

CALIGULA

(16/03/37-24/01/41)

Caligula was born on August 31, 12 in Antium. Ninth child of Germanicus and Agrippina the Elder, he lost his father in 19. His mother was disgraced by Tiberius and died in exile in 33. He was Augustus' great-grandson through his mother and the little -nephew of Tiberius by his father. Caligula succeeds Tiberius after having assassinated him (according to Suetonius). His real name is Caius Caesar. His nickname comes from a "caliga" military shoe that he wore as a child with his father, in the army. After a promising start in 37-38, he was assassinated in 41.
