Historical background

CAMBRÉSIS - ARCHBISHOPRIC OF CAMBRAI - LOUIS DE BERLAIMONT

(1570-1596)

Louis de Berlaimont succeeded Maximilien de Berghes in 1570. In 1575 Louis de Berlaimont retired to Mons, Cambrai falling under French administration. After a failed siege in 1581, the Spaniards took Cambrai in 1595 allowing Louis de Berlaimont to regain his archdiocese. The Spaniards, despite the Pope's injunctions, did not let him regain power over Cambrai, however, as this place had become too important from a military point of view. He was the last Archbishop of Cambrai to have minted.
