Historical background

CAMPANIA - CALES

(3rd century BC)

Cales (Calvi), a few kilometers north of Capua, in the region of Caserta was the ancient city of the Aurunci and the capital of the Ausoni. It was a Latin colony of 2,500 Roman citizens established in Campania as early as 334 BC (Titus Livy VIII, 16, 13-14). It was the center of Roman domination in Campania. The city rebelled against the authority of Rome during the Second Punic War in 209 BC and was severely punished. In the following two centuries, the city played an economic role thanks to its important production of ceramics with the "caleni" vases.
