Le 10 février 1954, la municipalité de la paroisse de Saint-Joseph-de-Sorel est constituée en ville et prend le nom de Tracy. Le choix de ce nom de noblesse du marquis de Tracy est le résultat de la soumission d'un citoyen dans le cadre d'un concours.
