Historical background

CANADA - LOUIS XV

(1715-1763)

Canada was discovered by the Cabot Brothers in 1497 on behalf of England. Jean Verrazzano reconnoitred the shores of Canada on behalf of François I in 1524, but Jacques Cartier was responsible for discovering Canada and ascending the St. Lawrence estuary in 1534. A second expedition the following year enabled him to ascend the St. Lawrence to Stadacona (Quebec) and Hochelaga (Montreal). His third trip, in 1540, allowed him to create the first counter in Sainte Croix. Samuel Champlain then founded Quebec in 1608 and settled in Acadia. Canada had only ten thousand settlers in 1683 when the French began to clash with the English. By the Treaty of Utrecht, the French abandoned Acadia, Newfoundland and Hudson Bay to England, the origin of the conflict which would oppose France and England during the Seven Years' War (1756-1763).
