Historical background

CAPPADOCIA - CAPPADOCIAN KINGDOM - ARIARATHES VIII EUSEBES EPIPHANES

(100-95 BC)

Ariarathes VIII, is the second son of Ariarathes VI Ephiphanes Philopator (130-116 BC) and Laodike, the sister of Mithridates VI of Pontus (121-63 BC). After the assassination of Ariarathes VII Philometor and the installation of Ariarathes IX Eusebes Philopator by his father, Mithridates VI of Pontus (120-63 BC) the Capadocian nobility revolted and proclaimed the second son of Ariaarthes VI as king. Returning from exile, he had to quickly face the Pontic forces and was finally defeated. He fled and died soon after, the last descendant of the dynasty. The Cappadocians then chose Ariobarzanes I while Ariarathes IX remained in power in Cappadocia until the peace of Dardanos in 85 BC..
